LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY

“The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.” This isn’t perfect, but I had a pretty great time. Lee Cronin did the last evil dead, and this movie feels that, the exorcist, and the mummy, all in one. It’s creepy, fucked up, and disgusting. I do have issues with some effects in the final act, and it’s a little long, but I would gladly take another one of these. Mummies are the most under used horror vehicles.

MY GIRL (1991)

“Vada is obsessed with death. Her mother is dead, and her father runs a funeral parlor. When Vada’s father hires Shelly, a makeup expert, and begins to fall in love, Vada is outraged and does everything in her power to split them up.” This is a classic that I somehow never saw. Even had the ending spoiled for me, and it was still really effective. Great job by everyone involved, especially Anna Chlumsky. I’ve only seen her in this, and one of the most underrated comedies ever, Veep. On Netflix.

HOW TO MAKE A KILLING

“Disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family, a blue-collar will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way.” I thought this was solid, but apparently a remake of a better movie? Regardless, I think this accomplishes what it sets out to do, in a non flashy way. Glen Powell is great opposite Margaret Qualley as well.

WAR AND PEACE (1965)

“The Russian aristocracy prepares for the French invasion on the eve of 1812.” Over 7 hours in length, and divided into 4 parts, this is quite a commitment. It’s without a doubt too long, and there are aspects of it that are more interesting than others, but the scale of the filmmaking is impressive. There are scenes with hundreds of people on screen at once, and is absolute chaos. There’s multiple sweeping shots that you wonder how they accomplished back then. Part 3 is the best. There also had to have been at least a dozen horses killed in this movie, insane stuff.

HBO Max.

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE

“Mario ventures into space, exploring cosmic worlds and tackling galactic challenges far from the familiar Mushroom Kingdom.” I enjoyed this fine, but I’m kinda surprised they went the galaxy route instead of something smaller and worked up to this? Regardless, it’s fun with lots of Nintendo characters. I kinda think the criticisms of this movie come from people who want these characters to be deeper than they are.

THE TRAIN (1964)

“In 1944, a German colonel loads a train with French art treasures to send to Germany. The Resistance must stop it without damaging the cargo.” Exactly the type of movie not made anymore. Excellent action, practical effects and cinematography. They are really blowing up and crashing trains and it’s glorious. Add the world war 2 element and Nazi villains and this is just great. On Prime or Tubi.

FACES OF DEATH

“A woman, employed as a website content moderator, comes across a series of violent videos reproducing death scenes from a film.” I wouldn’t say it’s a remake of the 1978 exploitation film, but a but a different take and modernized for the internet generation. Dacre Montgomery plays one of the best slasher psychos in recent memory. Had a great time with this. Will be on Shudder in the near future.

S4: THE BOB LAZAR STORY

“From jet engines to Los Alamos, Bob Lazar’s life is rooted in science. In 1988, hired at S4 near Area 51, he reverse-engineered alien tech. Narrated by Lazar, this film uses exclusive footage to reveal America’s best-kept secret.” Whether you are familiar with the story or have never heard it before, it’s absolutely fascinating. I don’t know if Bob’s telling the truth, but he seems genuine, and this is so relevant to all the UAP news that’s been reported. Rented on Prime.

PIZZA MOVIE

“High college students face an unexpectedly epic journey when they must navigate two flights of stairs to retrieve their pizza delivery, turning a simple task into a surreal adventure.” I thought this was pretty fun, but gets a little too absurd for its own good. I do think the cast is genuinely great, and it’s got some great running gags. On Hulu.
