THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME

“Wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda appoints his only daughter, a nun, as sole heir to his estate. As Korda embarks on a new enterprise, they soon become the target of scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists and determined assassins.” I’m hot and cold with Wes Anderson, but this is one of his better movies as of recently. Benicio Del Toro and Michael Cera are the standouts, but the whole cast is great. This feels slightly less doll-house theater like normal Wes, but it’s still clearly his vision, and he’s so good at doing this thing.

THREADS

“The effects of a nuclear holocaust on the working class city of Sheffield, England and the eventual long-term effects of nuclear war on civilization.” This seemed timely, and wow was it bleak. Obviously we don’t want Nuclear war, but Jesus Christ. It feels a tad dated, but this could not get the point across better. Shudder.

PLAY MISTY FOR ME

“The life of a disc jockey is turned upside down after a romantic encounter with an obsessed fan.” Really enjoyed this. It’s a fun thriller, with Clint Eastwood again playing against type, and Jessica Walter’s is out of her mind.

Prime Video.

MARATHON MAN

“After the murder of his older brother, a New York history student is hounded by shadowy government agents on the trail of a Nazi war criminal who is trying to retrieve smuggled diamonds.” Nazi’s are the beat villains. The first hour is pure paranoia and what the fuck is going on, before it truly comes together. Not perfect, but a really solid 70’s thriller. The scene this movie is known for is an absolute nightmare. Paramount +

FRENCH CONNECTION 2

““Popeye” Doyle travels to Marseille to find Alain Charnier, the drug smuggler who eluded him in New York.” I wanna say this is inferior to the original, but not by much. This is a legit good crime thriller with a genuinely deranged Hackman performance. There’s also a specific set piece that I legitimately don’t know how they did it.

Rented on Prime.

THE BEGUILED

“While recuperating in a Confederate girls’ boarding school, a Union soldier cons his way into each of the lonely women’s hearts, causing them to turn on each other, and eventually, on him.” This is Clint Eastwood’s misery, just set in the Confederate South. This felt very different than what you normally see Clint doing, but in a good way.

Prime Video.

28 YEARS LATER

“A group of survivors of the rage virus live on a small island. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors.” The more I think about it, the more I loved this. It had an incredible trailer, and the actual movie subverted my expectations in so many ways that I can’t stop thinking about it. I just read an article on what the ending means that completely went over my head in the theater, and makes it absolutely chilling. Couldn’t recommend this more.

THE SHROUDS

“Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, builds a device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud.” I’m a giant Cronenberg fan, but since he’s made his comeback, I’ve been very mixed. I can appreciate that’s he’s getting older, and his themes are grief and death, but these don’t get there for me. All his movies are weird, this is no different, but it’s almost not weird enough.

THE DROWNING POOL

“Harper’s a big-city PI, who travels to Louisiana to help an old girlfriend who’s worried her husband will find out she’s been cheating on him.” I’d heard this was a good companion piece to “Night Moves,” and while it’s not as good, it’s still a solid mystery thriller. Paul Newman always shows why he was one of the great movie stars. It’s also funny how this is third Melanie Griffith movie I’ve seen in a row and didn’t even mean to. Rented on Prime.
