THE HOUSEMAID

“A struggling young woman is relieved by the chance for a fresh start as a maid for a wealthy couple. Soon, she discovers that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.” This felt like a super elevated life time movie, but in a good way. I was pretty entertained the whole time, but this is bonkers. Amanda Seyfried’s character is out of her mind.

HAMNET

After losing their son Hamnet to plague, Agnes and William Shakespeare grapple with grief in 16th-century England. A healer, Agnes must find strength to care for her surviving children while processing her devastating loss.” The last best picture nominee off the list. So this is supposed to be sad, but I’m dead inside and it just didn’t do anything for me. Shakespeare kinda bores me, but Jessie Buckley is so great, she really elevates the movie for me. This would probably hit harder for a parent. Rented on Prime.

THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR

“A minor disagreement between neighbors in Florida takes a lethal turn, with police body camera footage and interviews probing the aftermath of the state’s controversial “stand your ground” laws.” I couldn’t help but think how much of this happens across the country that you just don’t hear about. It made me sad, but it’s incredibly effective. Makes you think twice about fighting with a neighbor.

On Netflix.

RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP (1958)

“A U.S. submarine commander who’s obsessed with sinking a particular Japanese ship butts heads with his first officer and crew.” This was great. Legitimately tense at times, and you actually feel the claustrophobia. Really impressed with the effects of the time as well. Don Rickles! On Tubi.

SONG SUNG BLUE

“Lightning and Thunder, a Milwaukee husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute act, experience soaring success and devastating heartbreak in their musical journey together.” Didn’t have any expectations for this, and I was kinda blown away. There’s a lot of heart here, and an insane true story. The whole cast kills it, and I would honestly recommend it to anyone. On of the surprises of the year for me.

On Hulu soon.

THE BALTIMORONS

“A newly sober man’s Christmas Eve dental emergency leads to an unexpected romance with his older dentist as they explore Baltimore together.” This is delightfully silly, but the characters actually feel genuine. One of the more underrated movies of last year, and a sneaky good holiday movie.

Rented on Prime.

SEND HELP

“An employee and her insufferable boss become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. Here, they must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, will they make it out alive?” Had a great time with this. My favorite Rachel McAdams role since Game Night, and she’s excellent with Dylan O’Brien. This was a lot funnier than expected, not mention gory and disgusting. Sam Raimi is one of the most underrated directors, and he can balance all of that extremely well.

THE SECRET AGENT

“In 1977, a technology expert flees from a mysterious past and returns to his hometown of Recife in search of peace. He soon realizes that the city is far from being the refuge he seeks.” Mixed on this one. I think it’s well acted, but it’s very weird and a lot to take in. For me I felt like there was legitimate disconnect with the information being given. I read over a plot summary afterward which definitely helped. I seem to be in the minority here, so maybe it deserves another watch. On Hulu soon.

DEAD OF WINTER

“A woman, travelling alone through snowbound northern Minnesota, interrupts the kidnapping of a teenage girl. Hours from the nearest town and with no phone service, she realizes that she is the young girl’s only hope.” Hadn’t heard of this, saw it on a beat of the year list, and really enjoyed it. Emma Thompson bringing humanity to what’s actually a pretty hardcore movie. I have some nitpicks, but I was genuinely on the edge of my seat, and it’s has a great villain. Rented on Prime.
