ELIO

“Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination, finds himself on a cosmic misadventure where he must form new bonds with alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be.” Another Oscar nominee checked off. I liked this, didn’t love it, but would still consider is B tier, Pixar. Still heart and great visuals, story lacked a bit for me. Disney+.

SCREAM 7

“When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target.” A little bit of a rollercoaster for me. I didn’t love the first bit, but it slowly pulled me in and I enjoyed it for the most part. The farther away I get though, the more negative I feel. It really hurts that they fired Melissa Barrera, and Jena Ortega decided not to come back. Neve Campbell returns, and it just didn’t feel like there was really anywhere else for her character to go. I have a couple other small complaints that would be spoilers, but I generally like all the scream movies in one way or another.

GUMMO (1997)

“Lonely residents of a tornado-stricken Ohio town wander the deserted landscape trying to fulfill their boring, nihilistic lives.” This might be the most off-putting movie I’ve ever seen. It’s narratively aimless, it’s disgusting, and just fuckin weird. It was shot in Nashville, but the premise takes a such a shot at Ohio, I’m not sure how to not be offended. I was reading reviews afterward and came across this gem: Werner Herzog praised the film and talked about being impressed by the bacon taped to the wall during the bathtub scene. You gotta search online to find this.

EXIT 8

“A man becomes increasingly desperate when he realizes he is trapped in a subway station, needing to complete a mission to get out.” This is basically one of those dream sequences in a video game that’s just fucking annoying and you want it to end.

THE LONGEST DAY (1962)

“The events of D-Day, told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view.” I’d heard that this was the original Saving Private Ryan. First hour is a little slow and I had my doubts, but it really kicks into gear and lives up to the hype. Pretty intense and chaotic, but has some small human moments as well. I recommend this for sure.

Rented on Prime.

A BETTER TOMORROW 2 (1987)

“A restauranteur teams up with a police officer and his ex-con brother to avenge the death of a friend’s daughter.” This feels like a step down from the first. It’s actually felt kinda cheesy at times, but you can feel the bigger budget, and the final fight is pretty awesome, and redeems it somewhat. On Prime.

IVAN’S CHILDHOOD (1962)

“During WWII, Soviet orphan Ivan Bondarev strikes up a friendship with three sympathetic Soviet officers while working as a scout behind the German lines.” This really feels like a spiritual prequel to “Come and See.” This shows all the horror and devastation that comes from war, but almost in a dreamlike sense. Very well done, and amazing cinematography. First feature film from legendary Russian director, Andrei Tarkovsky. Rented on Prime.

ALI G INDAHOUSE (2002)

“Ali G unwittingly becomes a pawn in the Chancellor’s plot to overthrow the Prime Minister of Great Britain. However, Ali is embraced by the nation as a voice of the youth, making the PM and his government more popular than ever.” I love most of what Sacha Baron Cohen does, but this just didn’t hit for me. I think overall it’s his weakest character. Still some funny bits, but my favorite thing was that this just didn’t seem like something Martin Freeman would be involved with at all, so that made me laugh. Rented on Prime.

JUDGMENT AT NUREMBURG (1961)

“Fictionalized depiction of the 1947 Judges’ Trial, the third of 12 trials of Nazi war criminals conducted by the American occupying forces in Nuremberg, Germany, in which former judges of Nazi Germany were tried for their actions.” Having watched the 2025 “Nuremberg” this just felt like such a slog. Three hours long, and just not nearly as engaging. The definition of a slow paced and dated.

On Prime.
