“A sheltered and manipulative Southern belle and a roguish profiteer face off in a turbulent romance as the society around them crumbles with the end of slavery and is rebuilt during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.” One of the most famous movies of all time, and it’s absolutely wild. The portrayal of slavery and the south is basically like they are doing nothing wrong and the north is just trying to ruin their way of life. Just a baffling movie to be made, even in 1939. Technically it looks fantastic and has great production value. There’s zero reason for it to be almost 4 hours, but I do appreciate the 5-7 minute introduction about the making and history of the film. Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an acting Oscar. With inflation, this is the highest grossing movie of all time. Watched on Max.
